2022-2023 Recipients

Anna “Anicka” Ashcraft

“Aviation has played a significant role in my life since childhood. Every year we fly to visit my family in the Czech Republic, and as a result, I’ve naturally grown to love the ambiance of the airport and the feeling of lifting off a runway. At eight years old, I told my cousin that one day I’d become a pilot and fly her all the way to America to visit me. From that moment, pursuing my aviation career has always felt right. My dad has his Private Pilot’s License and has always encouraged my interest in flight. Listening to his experiences in aviation and how the lessons he learned translate into everyday life are just a part of that. Getting my Private Pilot’s License is a gateway into my aviation career and will enhance my discipline, judgment, and critical thinking skills.

I am dedicated to getting my Private Pilot’s License by the end of this year. I am aware of the constant effort and devotion that I will have to put into studying, and flight training. As well as the other opportunities that I will have to forgo as a result. Nonetheless, I am driven to achieve this goal and look forward to the day of taking my check-ride and declaring that I am a pilot.

Getting my Private Pilot License will instill confidence that I can achieve major goals that I set for myself. After getting my Private License, I will strive to get my instrument rating by the end of or shortly after my senior year of high school, and then go on to get my commercial license and potentially my CFI in college. I highly value the freedom and independence that comes with being able to fly yourself just about anywhere in the world. Becoming a pilot will teach me crucial life skills, build strong connections with like-minded individuals, and lead to some of the best experiences life offers.”

Jonathan “JT” Haberern

“I want to obtain my private pilot license because I hope to turn flying into my career. I have always wanted to be a pilot since I was a young child. People have always asked me when or why I want to become a pilot, and truthfully I have always known. I am pursuing my pilot license to have one of the requirements met in my ultimate dream of having a career in aviation.

I am fully committed to putting in all the time and effort necessary to achieve this goal. I am an organized person and would schedule time out to work on my pilot's license. I like to stay on track and always work on a goal until I have completed it. I will use this mindset in pursuing my pilot license as I will work tirelessly to complete the program. I have already started my journey towards my license. I have been managing my time between flying, ground school, volunteer work at Stepping Stones and my academics at Roaring Fork High School with no problem. So I do not foresee time management as an issue.

JT was awarded his Flight School Scholarship in honor of Elaine Harrison. Elaine is pictured flying her Tigermoth airplane over her ranch in Florida. According to her son Peter Harrison “The airplane did not have an electrical system or any radios so she could not operate anywhere there was a tower. I remember when this picture was taken. A friend of hers was in the front cockpit and kept trying to stand up to get her picture and she was scared they would lose their balance and fall back due to the airstream.”

My pilot license would be very influential in my life after high school. Because I plan on pursuing a path in aviation having a building block towards that goal already complete would be very helpful to me. Because pilot licenses are very expensive to obtain, already having my pilot license would free me from a potential financial burden after high school. Once I obtain my pilot license I begin instruction in hopes of obtaining my instrument rating before I graduate high school. While I have not decided whether I want to pursue an aviation career in the military or civilian sphere, I know that I want aviation to be my career.”

Oliver Kelly

“I have dreamed of being a pilot since I was 6 years old. Aviation is my motivation to wake up in the morning, and it is what I dream about at night. Almost every short story I wrote for my classes in school was about aviation. I Dream about being a commercial pilot, and having my Private Pilot's license would be a large step to getting there. I go to the airport to watch airplanes, and I take aviation classes at school. I want to be a commercial pilot more than I want anything else in the world. I have learned multiple languages because I believe that that will help me in aviation. My motivation to do well in school, and to try is both the same thing; it is my dream to be a commercial pilot. My passion is aviation. As the son of a single immigrant mother and absent father getting my private pilot's license would be almost impossible without help.

I do well in school (as any of my teachers can attest to) and this is due largely to effort, and good time management. I would study for the written exam on weekends when I do not have any conflicts. For my flight lessons, they would take priority over any conflicting activity, as being a pilot is my ultimate goal in life.

I believe that the purpose of my life is to be a commercial pilot. I will work as hard as is possible to achieve this. I think getting my private pilot's license in high school will make my further training both easier and faster. I am going to try my hardest to achieve my dream, and the private pilot's license is the first step.”
